A Journey with Alternative Varieties: Reflecting on the AAVWS Experience
By Brooke Edson, 2024 AAVWS Committee Member, Exhibitor and Judge
This year, I had the privilege of participating in the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show (AAVWS) as an exhibitor, committee member, and judge. Over the past three years, the AAVWS has become much more than just a wine show to me—it’s a celebration. The show champions the beauty of diversity beyond the mainstream and fosters a vibrant, supportive community united by a passion for exploring the unconventional.
As an exhibitor working with alternative varieties, I have witnessed the excitement these wines create – a sense of discovery and a break from the norm. Producing wines considered alternate in Australia comes with a unique blend of freedom and responsibility. It allows us to go beyond tradition, embrace creativity, and craft something distinctive. There is a beauty in this process – in exploring the unknown and sharing the results with others who value the innovation and diversity that these varieties bring.
Being a committee member at the AAVWS, even in a relatively small role, has been a truly inspiring experience. The incredible people who bring this show to life are its heart and soul, dedicating countless hours and tireless effort to make it all happen. Their passion, creativity, and commitment to celebrating alternative varieties are nothing short of remarkable. I feel very grateful to be part of such an extraordinary group.
Judging at the AAVWS offers an exciting challenge, tasting Australian expressions of these alternative varieties often means stepping into uncharted territory sometimes without a clear benchmark for comparison. This makes the process both difficult and deeply rewarding, as it pushes us to focus on the wine’s individuality and character. Each wine is meticulously judge and scored accordingly, but it is also about appreciating each wine’s uniqueness and embracing the journey that these varieties are going through in Australia.
Beyond the judging, the AAVWS offers an immersive experience. Through events like the Stewards’ Dinner, Feature Dinner, Talk and Taste, and the Awards Long Lunch, we connect, share stories, and celebrate all things alternative. These gatherings transform it from a wine show into a festival of wine, a true celebration of innovation and passion.
Reflecting on this year’s AAVWS, I’m grateful for the journey. Though I’ve only been involved for a few years, I’m constantly inspired by the dedication of those who came before us. From the families who first brought these varieties to Australia to the winemakers who continue to experiment and innovate, everyone involved contributes to the vibrant purpose that drives the show.
The AAVWS is more than just a wine show—it’s a meeting place for people, wines, and stories. It’s a celebration of bold ideas, uncharted paths, and the beauty of being unapologetically different.
